For Lazer, our son and friend of 14 years

Dearest Lazer

After 13+ of your 14 years in this world that you spend with us, you have finally been released into the next life on 15 March 2008 at 20:15 . Although I know you can run and play like you used to and you can breath without effort, I am going to miss you terribly.

Every morning started with you. In fact, you were my alarm. I awoke by the sound of you jumping off the bed, and standing in front of the door, asking me to take you down stairs.

Every evening ended with you when I carried you back upstairs to the bedroom. I want you to know that you were never a burden to us, and that I would have done it for another 100 years if we both could live that long!

It has been 7 months after your operation. 7 months that we could steal off your new life to stay with us a little longer. Because I know it wasn't easy for you, I want to thank you for your sacrifice.

I also know that your one wish for us is to remember you as you were when you were still young and full of life. My image of you will always be your playful manner of spreading your front legs, ready to move fast in any direction, waiting for someone to chase you. And when you thought it was time for a snack, that you would bark in the highest pitch possible (and most unexpectedly) that would make the largest man jump with surprise! And then when you still don't get what you want, you go for the closest toes and bite (nibble really)!

I can see you run around in circles, playing with the other dogs, and with us. And then you suddenly slows down, roll around in the grass (you're not allergic anymore!), making grunting noises with ever quick turn, to the left, and then to the right.

What else can I say Ysterman, YOU LOVED YOUR FOOD!! We could give you anything and you would gobble it down. You taught us to enjoy life, to live to the fullest, and to be grateful for what you have. You have taught us that if you don't get what you want, then you ask for it. If you still don't get it, demand it!

You taught us the best of times is spend in nature with family and friends, to protect those dear to you and to stand up for yourself and for what is right. You have taught us humility to accept help from others if you cannot continue on your own any longer, and to know that in those times you are lifted higher than you could ever reach on your own, and that there is nothing to be ashamed of to accept help when you need it.

You have taught us to start each day early, as life do not wait for anyone. Embrace each day with its limitations and adventures. Although each day brings you closer to your dreams, it also brings you closer to the next life, so do not waist a day without telling those around you that you love them, and make sure you spend time with them every day, not someday.

You have taught us to laugh, and to have fun! If you don't have fun and you don't enjoy life, what is the point then, really? Enjoy your physical abilities while you still can, but if you loose them, don't whine... carry on with everything you've got. Some days will be better and some days will be worse, but every day is a gift.

Thank you for the past 13+ years. You will always be in our hearts, in our thoughts and we know we will see you again!! And when you visit us from time to time, and we are still morning over you, just remember we only morn for ourselves. But we will find comfort in the fact that you are free! Free from pain, free from the limited physical body, free from your allergies and your heart condition.

You are now with your new (old) family, we know that you had one big party last night, and everyone attended: Zulu, Tekkies, Stanzi, Benos, Tosca, Sheena, Tico, Debbie, and yes maybe even Mr Little and 'Piet die rot' (yes Lazer, he is almost as big as a cat, but he's a rat!).

O yes, thank you for the fart you send us last night to let us know you were here. I get the feeling we will get those little 'presents' (pardon the pun) from time to time!

Till next time dear friend!

Day 17: Only you can make you happy

True happiness lies within you, not without. Reach out, Share, reach out, smile, hug

14 March 2008

Day 16: Every Problem has an Opportunity

Search for the seed of good in every adversity - every problem has an opportunity

13 March 2008

Day 15: You're in charge

Never allow anyone to rain on your parade - "Only God can shape a flower, but any foolish child can pull it to pieces"

12 March 2008

Day 14: Baby Steps

Set few realistic goals for each day to reach your ultimate goal

11 March 2008

Day 13: Hello world!

Welcome every morning with a smile! You are not born to fail

10 March 2008

Day 12: Make the extra effort

Do not neglect the little things or skimp on extra effort (liberty)

The top of liberty statue is completed with details of each strand of hair on lady liberties head. At the time of design, there was no way anyone could see the top of the statue. It was only years afterwards that helicopters could circle around the statue for everyone to appreciate even the smallest detail and care that was taken so many centuries ago.

Day 11: Laugh at yourself

Don't take yourself so seriously. Life isn't really as bad as we think it is. You really need to relax and remember that people will think of you what ever they will. You hardly have any control over it. No one is perfect, and people do not trust others who pretend they are.

Embrase your shortcomings and laugh at yourself! So what if you can't do everything you think you can do? At least you tried!

What did they say in the old days: "Laugh and the world laugh with you, cry and you cry alone".

Day 10: Last day for everyone

Treat others today as if it will be their last day. Even if it's friend of foe, how will you react to them knowing that tomorrow they will not be there. Treat them with compassion, patience and respect.

07 March 2008

Day 9: Your last day

Imagine today is your last day on this earth. Who will you spend it with? What will you do and how will you treat strangers? How important will money be to you, or all your posessions, or the possessions you still want to obtain? How will it feel to spend the last day of your life today?

Everyday should have something for everyone and everything. Make sure that every day you
  • work a little,
  • play a little,
  • say thanks and please,
  • find a hand to squeeze,
  • smile when meeting strangers,
  • spend some time with someone you love doing something they love doing,
  • spend time with your best friend, you!
  • hug/stroke an animal
  • live with greatfulness (if the car won't start, be thankful you have one)
  • feel the sun on your face
  • smell a flower
  • dance in the rain
  • skinny dip in the pool
  • ride a rollercoaster (or anything else that get's the juices flowing)
  • etc....

Day 8: Clutterless

How many times do you catch yourself during the day doing things that could either be given to someone else to do, or that should not be done at all?

Sometimes days are filled with menial tasks just in order to be busy, or to look busy for someone else's sake. Sometimes we do things because we made promises we shouldn't have. Or we do things because we planned in advance to do them, without checking if circumstances changed in the meantime, rendering some tasks useless and unimportant.

How many times do we neglect ourselves and our families, because you need just another hour, just another day, just another week... to complete the task at hand. Looking back on this time you realise that the job was a process, and that you forever missed out on the time you could have spend with your loved ones.

Doing things that recharge you make you more relaxed and more efficient to do the things you are responsible for during day time. Don't clutter or rush your day so much that you have forgotten to phone family, or your love ones was already asleep by the time you stopped working.

I Want to Break Free!

Dedicated to a good friend in turmoil

I want to break free
I want to break free
I want to break free from your lies
You're so self satisfied I don't need you
I've got to break free
God knows, God knows I want to break free

I've fallen in love
I've fallen in love for the first time
And this time I know it's for real
I've fallen in love, yeah
God knows, God knows I've fallen in love

It's strange but it's true
Hey, I can't get over the way you love me like you do
But I have to be sure
When I walk out that door
Oh how I want to be free, baby
Oh how I want to be free
Oh how I want to break free

But life still goes on
I can't get used to living without, living without
Living without you by my side
I don't want to live alone, hey
God knows, got to make it on my own

So baby can't you see
I've got to break free
I've got to break free
I want to break free, yeah
I want, I want, I want, I want to break free
Ooh yeah
I want to break - yeah eah

Day 7: No more wallowing

It is very easy to feel sorry for yourself. One self pity thought leads to another. Especially when you can find someone to agree with you!

Stop yourself! Fill your day with greatfullness that you have an able body, mind and spirit. Your life is a continuous up and down ride. It is your choice how long you stay in the down!

Love life

Day 6: Be Humble

When success knocks on your door, you have a chance to kick off the bad feelings and doubts you had about your own abilities. You feel great, in fact, you feel so great you feel you can take on the world. You survived the dip, you persisted through the hardship, and you raised as the victor!

People praise you for your good work, you'll start enjoying the benefits of all your hard work.
Remember though that no-one gets anywhere alone. Don't think too much of your own abilities. It is easy to forget how many people were involved to get you where you are.

How many times you had to be lifted up, or given a hand. Remember these people and know that one day, it will be your turn to lend a hand.

01 March 2008

Day 5: Family

No matter what happens, you have your family. They are your support system, always. No one really can 'go at life' alone. Or no one should have to anyway.

Family can be relatives, close friends, colleagues, or friends you haven't seen for years. The only key is that it is the people that believes in you. The people who makes you feel good about yourself and who wants you to be the best you can be.

It is the people who are there to pick you up when you are down. People to remind you of how fortunate you are, regardless of your hardships.

Even if everything else in your life is falling apart, remember your family. They will be there for you. Let them be.
